Feature Film Development Track

The Feature Film Development Track Fund provides project development funding to Western Australian scripted features at various milestones for up to one consecutive year. Successful applicants will work toward quality, distinctive, feature film projects with strong Western Australian outcomes that are capable of reaching their target audience and attracting further investment and/or market interest. Projects are assessed at each milestone by a panel including the Screenwest Development Coordinator and external industry experts. Feedback is provided to successful applicants at each stage.

Successful applicant(s) may be offered up to a maximum of $25,000 per assessment /milestone stage. Successful applicants may apply for additional funding at up to three subsequent milestones to a limit of $50,000 over the course of the track year. Projects will be assessed by Screenwest Management and two external assessors at agreed upon milestones (specific to each project’s needs). This panel has absolute discretion at any time to remove a project from the track, if it has not progressed sufficiently.

West Coast Visions

Screenwest’s West Coast Visions initiative is a screen industry development program that provides production funding for low budget features that are to be produced in Western Australia.

Screenwest is committed to creating a development pathway for Western Australian creative teams. Screenwest invests $750,000 of production funding into one low budget feature film intended for theatrical release each year under the West Coast Visions initiative.

West Coast Visions is designed to uncover, inspire and develop local talent and skills. The initiative supports talented and motivated writer/director/producer teams with distinctive visions who can best utilise this initiative to fulfill their professional potential.

To be competitive, applicants will need a well-developed, budget-savvy and marketable feature film surrounded by a team that can deliver the creative and logistical challenges of the project submitted.

The applicant team must include at least one Western Australian key creative (i.e producer, director or writer) credited in this position for the first time on a theatrically released feature film.

On-Demand Content Fund

Applications can be submitted at any time

The On-Demand Content Fund aims to support the production of exceptional online, interactive, virtual reality and or/multiplatform projects with well definied narratives and significant market attachment. Applicants can apply for up to $100,000 through this fund.

The On-Demand Content Fund has consolidated and simplified the pre-existing Digital Funding programs. On line content producers now have the option of applying through this fund or Documentary or Drama Investment Production Funds. Over the next six months there will be a review of funding available for online content with the aim to integrating it into mainstream development and production funding.

In the interim, applications for this fund will be accepted at any time, however they must have confirmed market and/or financing partners on board to be eligible.

Matched Development Investment Fund

Applications can be submitted at any time

Provides matched funding for projects that have received a development investment from a nationally or internationally recognised broadcaster or distributor. The Producer must present a suitable letter of agreement from the broadcaster/distributor as part of the application. Please refer to the Matched Development Investment Guidelines below for more information on how to apply.

Emergency Development Investment Fund

Applications can be submitted at any time

Provides time critical investment funds to further develop a project for production in Western Australia, where the applicant can demonstrate exceptional circumstances for it to be assessed outside of ordinary project development funding deadlines. Bill Warnock Writers Initiative

The Bill Warnock Initiative is a comprehensive, year-long professional development program for early career Western Australian writers, who do not possess a theatrically or commercially released feature film credit or broadcast television credit and who are looking to develop their career in screenwriting.

The successful candidates will undertake opportunities that are tailored to the individual, which may include hands-on experience locally, nationally and/or internationally, script development and high-level industry mentoring.

Slate Development Investment Round

Applications closed 12 September 2016

Screenwest has opened a Slate Development Investment round which provides funding for established drama producers and factual production companies to increase the marketability of their slate by financially supporting the sourcing, generation and creative development of projects. Slate Development Investment funding provides up to $150,000/yr for drama production companies; or $75,000/yr for factual production companies. Production companies will be eligible to apply for up to two years of funding through this current round.

This fund is designed for:

  • Established WA Drama Production Companies with at least two broadcast or theatrical credits in the past 5 years.
  • Established WA Factual Production Companies with at least two broadcast credits in the past 3 years.

The deadline for applications is Monday, 12 September, 2016 at 5pm.

Feature Navigator Development Program

The Feature Navigator Program is a comprehensive, year-long filmmaker and project development initiative for Western Australian directors working toward a debut feature film. The program connects select directors with producers, expert consultants, and the marketplace.

Elevate Short Form Development and Production Initiative

The Elevate initiative is a skills development program providing support for the development and production of short films and web-series to provide a calling-card for early to mid-career Western Australian filmmakers. Elevate is a multi-phased program involving high-level script and project development prior to moving into production. The program consists of two strands, Elevate30 and Elevate70 as detailed below.

In line with Screenwest’s new Indigenous Screen Strategy 2016 – 2020, each Elevate strand will have an Indigenous writer/director or filmmaking team participating in the program.

ELEVATE30

For filmmakers that have completed at least one quality short-form project.

Up to 3 teams (producer with a director and writer/s, or with a writer/director) will be selected to develop and produce a scripted short (live-action, animation or web-series), within one year of selection. One of these teams is identified as an opportunity for an Indigenous writer/director or filmmaking team.

Intended for projects 5-10 minutes in duration.

ELEVATE70

For more advanced filmmakers with a solid track-record in short-form filmmaking but still require an additional short for career progression.
Up to 3 teams (producer with a director and writer/s, or with a writer/director) will be selected to develop and produce a scripted short (live action, animation or web-series), within one year of selection. One of these teams is identified as an opportunity for an Indigenous writer/director or filmmaking team.

Intended for projects 10-15 minutes in duration.

There will be one intake in 2015 where both funding strands will run simultaneously. Successful projects will undergo specialised script and project development prior to moving into production. An Executive Producer, Production Company or Organisation will manage the production and delivery of the selected projects.The Elevate Initiative is a skills development opportunity that funds short films and webseries for early to mid-career Western Australian filmmakers.

There are two strands of the Elevate initiative; both aim to provide a calling card for Western Australian filmmakers. Elevate is a multi-phased initiative that takes place over one year and involves both a script development and a project management/budget workshop prior to moving into production.

EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS SOUGHT

For each Elevate strand, an external production company, experienced producer or organisation will oversee the production and delivery of the projects as an Executive Producer, for which Screenwest will be seeking expressions of interest. The Executive Producer of Elevate30, and the Executive Producer of Elevate70 will participate in the final selection of the respective projects, as well as the specialised script and project development support that the successful projects will receive through the initiative before moving into production.
